At least 13 people were killed and hundreds displaced after Mount Semeru, on the Indonesian island of Java, erupted Saturday afternoon, sending billowing hot clouds and volcanic ash toward nearby villages.

Houses in the area were blanketed in debris. In addition to the dead, dozens were reported injured. Many with burns were treated at nearby hospitals and health facilities, according to a report by Indonesia’s national disaster-management agency on Sunday.
